Thanks to all who were open to sharing your liturgical background for Shabbat services. As suspected, it loks like all of us are in different places, yet going in the right direction. R. Stuart, your service is very inspiring and I am sure it took you years to get there. On another note, it sure helps to have a seasoned cantor such Nick Vetter or others in our movement that have been trained in liturgy. Maybe the UMJC can come up with a 3-tier level for liturgy. Tier one for begginers, tier two for intermidiate and tier three for those who have arrived:)
I was fortunate enough to have remembered all the liturgy from my younger years, so I had to stand in as cantor and teacher of the congregation. I am currently raising up a youth to lead the Torah service and he is doing an excellent job. As for our congregation, we use Budoff’s MJ Siddur and I try to interact with various parts each Shabbat.I have asked some great teachers in the MJ movement to critique and instruct on our liturgy service and throughout the years I have incorporated a little here and there. I am still open for critique in order present a more honoring service to Hashem. Our service looks like this:
